Back to the Future: Winter Family Reading and Science Workshops
Presented at the library by the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History
Preschool-Adults. Have you ever visited a museum and wondered who collected all this “stuff”? How much more is in the basement of this place? Are museum collections really relevant in today’s fast-paced technological world? These workshops will give you a glimpse into how these blasts from our past are used every day in scientific discoveries around the world. Through family friendly hands-on activities, you will explore how collected specimens are critical to current research and learn about discoveries that have been made using them.
Workshop One: For the Birds
Wednesday, January 18th @ 5:30-6:30pm
In this workshop your family will explore the museum’s Ornithology Collection. Try your hand at gathering data from actual museum specimens and learn about other ways that the birds in the collection are used to protect other birds while advancing scientific theories.
*Workshop One is now over.
Workshop Two: The Secrets of Plants
Wednesday, February 15th @ 5:30-6:30pm
This workshop focuses on how plants are shared across the world and used in research to answer questions about global warming, habitat destruction, new medicinal uses and the spread of disease. Select and press some plants to take home, learn about techniques researchers use in collecting and labeling specimens for preservation, and see some of the specimens in the UM Herbarium collection.
*Participation is limited. Register in person to attend. Registration begins February 1st.
Workshop Three: We Collect Everything
Wednesday, March 15th @ 5:30-6:30pm
You will get introduced to the sometimes odd and unusual variety of collections from the past that are used in current research. Come try some hands-on labs to discover why these unusual time capsules from the past are so important to our scientific knowledge today.
*Participation is limited. Register in person to attend. Registration begins March 1st.
